Meet the McGain’s team
Peter studied landscape architecture at RMIT and commenced work at an Albert park nursery in 1975. He later operated a successful landscape design and construction business in Melbourne until 1999. Peter and his wife, Pam, then moved to the Surfcoast and created McGain’s Nursery in Anglesea in 2000, added their food store in 2005 and the cafe in 2012. Since then, their business has become a popular destination for locals and visitors to source quality plants, gardening advice, quality foods and ingredients, fantastic coffee and delicious meals.
Pam developed the concept of the Food Store after visiting the nursery based on the ‘potager’ kitchen garden at the Palace of Versailles in France. An enthusiastic and passionate cook, Pam’s aim is to bring the best of every food product from fruit and vegetables to wine, cheese, jams, biscuits, meats and preserves into one store. In 2012 this knowledge was expanded to include prepared cuisine in the cafe. As well as sourcing quality foods, Pam also manages the back-office duties of the business.
Growing up on a farm in Western Australia gave Karen her love of home-grown food. “It started me on a life of always being passionate about growing my own food and caring for the environment,” she says. After completing a graduate degree in Agricultural Science, Karen found herself drawn to sharing her love of food and sustainable gardening. “Working in the food store is great fun,” Karen says. “I am working in an industry that I really care about and I get to meet like-minded people.”
